Inspired by children’s stacking games, Varia by Gaia Bottari is a set of tableware perfect for those who can’t make up their mind. Modular in nature, and just like a game, the pieces that make up Varia can be mixed and matched.

April is over now, but we didn’t really get all that many showers, so maybe we’re due for lots of rain in May. reCOVER by Teracrea is a re-imagining of the typical coat stand into a miniature ecosystem. The base of the stand can be placed into any planter, so that your raincoats and drippy umbrellas can nourish the plant. What do you think of this design? Would you use it?

Coalesse brought some California sunshine to rain-soaked Milan as a backdrop to its range of work-life furniture showing at iSalone, which is blurring the boundaries between home and office. I spoke to Toan Nguyen and Scott Wilson about their designs. Toan Nguyen told me about his Lagunitas range and particularly the sofa above: “The brief was for a product that combined lounging and working. I wanted to create something which gave the user a lot of possibilities to work in a new way between the home and the office. People often don’t work at desks anymore – they don’t work in a fixed place, but at the same time they still need to write, to work on a laptop, lean forward sometimes and to lean back sometimes

Swedish designer Markus Johansson has released a slew of new products including the Walking Cabinet . The twisted form of the cabinet, coinciding with the four angled legs, give the appearance that it’s walking, as if it’s on its way somewhere. The body of the frame looks as if you pushed one side in one direction and pulled the other towards you, creating a piece that shows movement. You can even pair more than one together to form an entire system.

I was very lucky while I was at Salone del Mobile to get the chance to interview one of my favorite lighting designers, Michael Anastassiades . First I asked him about the inspiration behind his two new collections for Flos … Then we talked about his approach to design… You talked about the importance of ‘honestly expressed materials’ in your work – could you tell me about how that has informed this range? It’s important, when you’re designing something for a company like Flos. I’ve worked in my own collections in a very experimental way as my personal platform. The creation of my own brand and my own company was very much about achieving the freedom to express what I believed in, in my own way

Grain has partnered with Guatemalan natural dye co-ops for a new textiles collection that will launch in New York at ICFF in May 2013. Although they’ve been working in Guatemala now for many years, the Grain duo of Chelsea Green and James Minola decided to rethink all their textile projects solely using unbleached or naturally dyed hand spun Guatemalan cotton. Photo by Charlie Schuck After many experiments and learning, the collection features arious dyeing and weaving techniques, such as ikat and drop loop stitch created in collaboration with local Guatemalan artisans as well as artisans from Antigua. The new items include woven throw pillows, Turkish-style hand and bath towels, and cotton necklaces. Combining a mixture of eastern and western, The New Old Light is much like Taiwan, the location of the fixture’s designers, KIMU Design . The simple shape of the traditional paper lantern with the more modern and industrial form of the fixture itself, blend styles and aesthetics to create a fixture that could work with everyone’s decor.

Inspired by the highly stylized, science fiction film Blade Runner , POD Design’s principal Brooks Atwood (remember the NJIT professor who jumps on a trampoline ? Yeah, him.) designed a futuristic neon desk lamp called Tetra Light . The geometric fixture shines a bright, daylight-inspired glow that’s set with a dimmer to allow you to adjust for any mood. The design, made much the same way as a neon wall light would be, pushes the limits of glass bending by incorporating three bends in the fixture
