Milan 2013: Interview with Nendo’s Oki Sato VIDEO

In a courtyard in Brera, there grew a garden of tables… Stone Garden was one of two installations by Nendo Founder and Chief Designer, Oki Sato, for Caesarstone , commissioned to demonstrate the strength and durability of its quartz composite surface materials, more typically used for countertops, flooring and wall cladding. The second installation, The Stone-Edge Table collection, consisted of seven wooden tables, embellished with corner and leg details. Oki Sato said: In designing the Stone-Edge Table collection, I was able to take advantage of the strength of the material. Rather than ostentatiously applying the material to the entire design, we created wooden tables and used Caesarstone to protect the table top corners and feet.

Milan 2013: Wallpaper* Handmade

2013 saw the forth annual celebration of craftsmanship in the form of Wallpaper* Handmade, where designers, craftspeople and manufacturers are brought together and commissioned to create one-off pieces especially for the exhibition. I loved these table lights, called ‘Bruno’ by Karim Rashid ; part of the Love collection made by Verreum . More lighting from Norwegian designer Oyvind Wyller and Magnor . In Darkness is handblown into a shape that means light is filtered through tinted glass and therefore doesn’t destroy the ambience by being too bright. The cord is neatly integrated into the hanging of the shade. Shadow by Sebastian Bergne with Verreum is a series of mirrored glass, thermically insulated tableware

Thomas Wold: Exploring Wonder VIDEO

We collaborated with  MSN  to profile four artists and designers we love who we think embody the same design, content and functional philosophies as the new MSN.com: design with fierce reductionism, sharing real-time trends, and being perfect for touch. We think you’ll love learning more about these four creatives. Experience their work below, and check out the all-new MSN  here . I discovered the work of Thomas Wold back in 2007 . Since then, I’ve been following his work closely and he always seems to surprise me.

Milan 2013: Zona Tortona and MOST

I’m stretching the boundaries of Zona Tortona slightly, to include MOST , which was just around the corner at Milan’s National Museum of Science and Technology, originally built in the 16th Century as a Monastery. But first Zona Tortona proper. These light shades created a calming, white haven from the chaos outside! They are by PINWU , winners of last year’s SaloneSatellite Design Report Award. Next it was on to designersblock , where I spotted this beautifully understated rocking chair by new designer Charlotte Arvidsson .
