Finally, a Cal-King Bed Frame with space for dog kennels

Materials: 3 Expedit Units, two sheets of plywood, five 4 x 4’s, 5 metal ties, 10 metal brackets, king-sized sheet, staple gun. Description: We had a really hard time trying to find a platform for our Cal-King mattress that would afford us the kind of storage we needed for our small two-bedroom condo in Southern California. Most of the platform storage beds for sale were prohibitively expensive. We had seen a few people make smaller beds on this site using the Expedit bookshelves, so we decided to give it a go ourselves. Step One: Spend several weeks researching and arguing about how to design your bed

Vika Artur TV Stand

Materials: ikea Vika Artur Trestle with shelf, ikea Framsta wall bracket, ikea Betydlig wall bracket. Misc nuts & washers, threaded bar. Description: Not being a fan of ‘traditional’ designs when it comes to some furniture, I was looking for something other than the normal style of wooden rectangle box, on legs, with doors approach to TV stands. Inspiration hit me in the face one day while looking at an easel in an art supplies shop, and some months later I found the parts I needed to make it happen in Ikea.

ÄPPLARÖ headboard hack

Materials: ÄPPLARÖ Description: Materials: Ikea ÄPPLARÖ wall panel Description: I looked and looked for a simple headboard for my queen size metal bed frame (the typical kind with four casters and holes for attaching a headboard and footboard), but couldn’t find a suitable one anywhere. After finding the Ikea Hackers website, I decided that I’d be creative and “hack” myself a headboard. My requirements were these: – It had to be lightweight and easily moveable (I rent and I like to move my furniture around). – It had to be affordable (I set myself a budget of no more than 99 dollars). – It had to be around 62-63 inches wide (to properly fit the width of the queen bed frame).

Desk with Meters

Materials: BESTA, FRAMSTA, NUMERAR Description: I designed this desk to get all my computer equipment and cables up off the floor, behind cabinet doors, and leave my work surface completely clear. A major part of this project was also incorporating the analog meters which show my computer’s status. The desk is built mostly from modified IKEA parts (see the end for a complete parts list). There are wall-mounted cabinets in two depths. The lower center cabinets are cut to allow my monitors to be wall-mounted; the upper row holds my backup hard drives, video game consoles, speaker controller, UPS, printer, and other devices.

How can I use Thee, Expedit, Let Me Count the Ways…

Materials: Expedit TV Stand, Bjursta, 5″ corner braces, VESA swivel mounts, Custom Vinyl Subway Art Description: My apartment has a strange living area layout (almost pentagonal), and, being one to need my separate spaces, I wanted to create a conventional rectangular living room with a functional triangular office space. Ikea to the rescue! Given that my apartment is only 650 sq.ft and has a monstrous bedroom and walk-in closet, I needed multi-functional furniture.

Expedit under-stairs storage

Materials: Expedit shelving unit (149 x 149 cm) Description: The under-stairs area in our house was an awkward cluttered cupboard, but had the potential to be a great storage area in the hallway if it could be repurposed with some clever Ikea hackery. Expedit looked ideal… Materials 1 x Expedit 149cm x 149cm shelf unit, high-gloss white 3 x Expedit Insert doors, green 2 x shelf brackets 1 x large L-bracket 18 x small L-bracket (narrower than Expedit shelf-thickness) 44mm square section timber Step 1: Design I created a 3D model of our staircase and the full Expedit shelf unit in SolidWorks, then modified both of them to work out where I should cut down the Expedit, and get a feel for how the thing would look when done
