5 Easy To Grow Indoor Herbs

There are some essential ingredients we reach for when cooking or creating a beauty concoction that can easily be grown indoors. There are some essential ingredients we reach for when cooking or creating a beauty concoction that can easily be grown indoors.

1. Aloe Vera is a perfect plant to be used on burns, scrapes or cuts especially when cooking or baking. You literally just break a piece off the plant and use the gel inside directly on the wound. You can also use it in a variety of homemade beauty products including lotions and salves

2. Rosemary – fresh rosemary is delicious when cooking chicken or fish. You can pluck a few pieces off your plant and lay out to dry or dry in the oven. You can also use it fresh and sprinkle a few sprigs on top of your dish for roasting and baking.

3. Basil – Basil is another wonderful herb that can be used dried or fresh. You can use basil in salads or with any dish  where basil will enhance its flavor. Just pluck a few basil leaves off your plant and place on or in your dish. I love a cutting a few slices of tomatoes with mozzarella cheese and adding one or two pieces of basil on top with balsamic vinaigrette drizzled on top. Yum!

4. Thyme – thyme grows quickly and abundantly in the home and is another wonderful herb for cooking! I typically pluck several sprigs off and place in the oven or lay out to dry to use in a variety of dishes.

5. Mint – mint is also another great herb to grow indoors. My mint plant is currently growing outdoors because it exploded in abundance! Mint can be used in a variety of dishes but also works great in mixed drinks like mojitos! I use a mortar and pestle to grind the leaves to release the oils. I sometimes even pluck a few pieces off for a quick breath refresher. You can use this herb in many beauty products by extracting the oils including lip balm and lotions.

These are just a few of the many herbs that can be grown indoors but I found them to do the best with daily water and mild sunlight. Place them on the windowsill  in your kitchen or in a sun / green room in your house. Be careful to not have too much direct sunlight throughout the day for possibly drying them out. You can grow these beauties from seed to full plant, so have fun, enjoy and happy growing!

Alternative Living: Cleanliness & Hygiene

Staying hygienic is important to the overall health of an individual. The following are ways to substitute everyday hygienic practices and materials to eliminate the ingestion of unnecessary fragrances or chemicals.

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and isn’t just for baking! It is a fantastic dry shampoo. For those suffering from excess grease, the baking soda absorbs it all, leaving you with a freshly scented head of hair. Baking soda can also be mixed with a favored essential oil for an all natural non-allergenic laundry detergent.

There is an exuberant amount of unnecessary additives in name brand toothpaste. Those additives include sweeteners such as sorbitol, fluoride and triclosan. Although fluoride is considered “controversial” by most, there is a known effect of suppression on the thyroid hormone uptake. An alternative home recipe involved the mixture of coconut oil and you guessed it, baking soda! Generally you would use about 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda per half cup of coconut oil, mix thoroughly.

Dish detergents are another home product using unnecessary additives that could be detrimental to the overall health of the people using it. Mixing the ingredients of ¼ cup of baking soda and 2 cups of warm water then, adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and about two tablespoons of lemon juice is an amazing homemade dish soap recipe for glass and silverware.
Add a little more apple cider vinegar and lemon juice to the mix for tougher grime on dishes.

Being conscious of what we put into our bodies is an uplifting perspective into the eyes of our body and mind.

6 Different and Easy Ways to Rearrange Your Bedroom to Help You Sleep Better

Bring harmony and balance to your bedroom and sleep cycle by following some simple ways from a metaphysical and physical perspective.

  • Make sure your bed is open on both sides so you can climb in and cozy up from either side. This is said to reflect your internal openness, like that of the heart and of the mind. This is especially important when attempting to attract a romantic partner. If one side of the bed is pushed up against a wall, it’s like saying “i’m really only accessible from this side, and this side is my side, so you can come into this side but it may be hard to get out, move around or come back in.” Additionally, it is much more convenient, safer and comfortable when both sides of your nest are open and accessible
  • Do not have the head of your bed against a wall that shares a wall with a bathroom or a kitchen. The draining of the water is said to promote a draining of your energy especially when used in conjunction with sleep where your mind and body is more relaxed and vulnerable. If you have a space that does not give you a choice but to have your beds head sharing a wall with a bathroom or kitchen, then make sure you have a bed headrest. Bed headrests create a “mini” wall or barrier separating the actual bed from the shared wall. This is also why some feng shui practitioners suggest keeping the lid on the toilet seat closed and the bathroom door shut at all times. For those looking for a more practical reason – the frequent running water through the pipes or general bathroom use during the night creates sound whether fully waking you up or not which unsettles the natural REM cycles we experience as human beings to achieve the best sleep we possibly can.
