It’s no surprise that the infamous street known as “Rainbow Row” in Charleston, South Carolina is a huge tourist attraction when heading down south. Rainbow Row is a series of thirteen colorful row houses painted in pastel blues, yellows, pinks and greens located on East Bay Street.
In 1778, a fire destroyed much of the neighborhood but only a small number of houses were spared on the street. In 1931, a section of these houses were purchased in hopes to one day restore them. Eventually, funds were gathered to restore a few of the homes and were painted in pale pinks to resemble a colonial Caribbean color scheme. Overtime the remaining houses were restored and the new owners sought to continue the trend by painting their houses in the present day pastel colors.
“Rainbow Row” used to be located directly on the riverfront of the Cooper River before it was filled in later on. A common myth behind the using of the brightly colored paint was so that intoxicated sailors would know which home was theirs when coming into port!

Many industrial and antique designed furnishings have a vintage look and rugged feel to them. They are made of hardy materials like cast iron, galvanized steel, reclaimed wood, and regenerative leather typically featuring distressed details.
Many pieces are made to look like they are built from raw materials but often times they get their worn appearance from techniques such as brushing or galvanization.
If you are ever looking for an industrial design furnishing but don’t know where to start begin with pieces that combine metal and wood throughout the design. Anything that looks like it has been sitting in an old automobile factory or warehouse is also a great place to start.
Don’t be afraid to combine styles either. Interestingly, rustic design, which is often associated with rural spaces and industrial design, which is often associated with urban spaces make for a truly eclectic atmosphere when blended together in one commercial or residential space.

Another take on Gothic designs, the Modern Gothic style seeks to adapt, abstract and apply Gothic designs to new forms. Much of the Gothic home furnishings can be described as both “pointy” and most certainly ornate. Using dark colors in your color scheme whether it is on the walls or on the furniture pieces themselves is also indicative of this style. To add a contemporary and modern twist to the Gothic style – clean lines in dark colors with splashes of patterns, textures, fringes or subdued ornate details in the mix will give you this effect.

Minty green is such a delicate and feminine color. It reminds me of the spring season. In some instances, it also has a very vintage-feel to it. When paired with other pastel colors or with dark browns and blacks, it creates calmness and a relaxed atmosphere. Refreshing mint looks incredible whether it be on furniture, accents or on the walls of a room.
