Materials: Jonas Secretary
Description: I wanted a cat cabinet to hold both the cat food and cat litter. I wanted the cat litter to be high enough so I wouldn’t have to bend over to clean it. I also wanted the cabinet to serve as a dark hiding space for my cats (they like to get away from the dogs every now and then). After being inspired by many of the Ikea hacks on this site, I took a trip to Ikea and found the Jonas Secretary.
I put the cabinet together using the Ikea directions and then proceeded to hack the product in the following way:
1. I decided the top “computer station” was the perfect place to put the litter, as I could easily slide it out onto the pull down door. I cut a hole on the bottom right hand side using an electric jigsaw. The original hole was not big enough for my fat cat so I ended up cutting almost 1/3 of the shelf away. This allows my cats to drop from the top section of the cabinet into the top drawer.
2. I made an identical cut on the bottom left hand side of the top drawer, creating an opening into the middle drawer.
3. I cut an entry hole (about 5×7 inches) level with the second drawer. I nailed a picture frame I found for $3 at Target to the opening. Now the cats are able to climb into the second food drawer, up to the third napping drawer and then into the litter cabinet at the top.
4. Considering how heavy my cats are, I reinforced the two middle drawers by screwing two pieces of plywood (1/2 x 2 x 16 and 13/16 inches each) under each drawer to help support the bottom.
5. I used clear adhesive shelf liner in the litter cabinet area (along with some sealant) to help with cleanup.
6. Originally, I was just going to place the food dishes in the second shelf, but the space ended up being smaller than I thought. My current food dishes are metal with circular lips. I decided to cut circles out of the bottom of the second drawer to hold each dish.
7. I never liked the handles that came with the cabinet, so I just never put them on. I also thought the cabinet was too dark, so I affixed a mirror I bought at Ikea to the front door. This process was a little more intense than I originally thought, since the door is actually hollow. I cut the mirror to size, then GLUED and screwed the holders into place.
Overall, I’m really pleased with the outcome. Now I just hope my cats like it as well!

Materials: AKURUM Wall Cabinet, Door, Hinges, and shelves. small fan, computer fan dust cover, cable protector and L brackets.
Description: I needed a place to store all my computer network equipment in one location as all the items, cables, and equipment have taken over my mechanical room.
I looked at other commercial options and the starting price was over $150.00 for a computer rack. I decided that I could pick up a basic wall cabinet and cut holes for the wiring, add a small fan and then mount everything in the cabinet out of sight.
I picked up an AKURUM 21 x 30 wall cabinet, hinges, door, and 2 sets of shelves, and a roll of cable loom from Ikea. I picked up a small fan, fan cover, and L brackets to finish out the hardware.
All of the telephone, video, and computer network cables are run in two holes created in the top of the cabinet with a 2″ hole saw. Each of the shelves has 2 “U” shaped holes cut out in the rear to allow for cables to be run and also for ventilation.
On the bottom of the cabinet is one hold for the power cord and the fan is mounted over a 2″ hole on the right side with the fan cover screwed to the outside of the cabinet. All of the outlets in my home are wired with the TIA-56A standard so I can connect either a telephone or computer to any of the jacks and just run a patch cord from the patch panel that is mounted under one of the shelves using the L Brackets. In the future, all I need to purchase is a Telephone Module that I will mount in the cabinet and connect to telephone Network Interface Box.
All of the video cables from the home are run into the bottom of the cabinet and can be either of the feeds from my Dish Network receiver.
Currently I have a WD My Book, Linksys N2slu (connects WD book to my home network), Linksys Cable Modem, Linksys Wireless Router, Linksys wireless router and 4 port switch, Wired network Switch, Wired Network Patch Panel, and fan.
One of the nice parts of this project is the noise from the equipment is cut down and also dust is kept out of the cabinet with the dust cover that is placed over the fan.

It’s a bench but Melanie makes it do double (and triple) duty as a coffee table and some times computer table. I like that the “tables” are removable and can be repositioned to where you want them to be. This is an Ikea hack I made some time ago.

As someone who types on a keyboard all day long (as I’m sure a lot of you do to), the Keyboard Bench instantly caught my attention. This bench is made of Baltic birch and is embedded with two thousand computer keys that you can actually press, though don’t expect any words to show up on your monitor.
The Interactive Wolfgang Keyboard Bench, as it is officially called, is the work of Nolan Herbut. Herbut is a student of Industrial design at the University of Alberta and considers his biggest strength the ability to incorporate outside influences and inspiration like friends, family and other outside factors into his designs.
