Pull Lamp by Whatswhat for Muuto

The latest design to launch from Scandinavian design house Muuto is the Pull Lamp , designed by the Stockholm-based studio Whatswhat . Pull was the 2010 winner from Muuto’s annual competition where design students have historically had their winning designs produced by the company. The interactive lamp features a playful detail that allows the user to pull the shade to a lower position as needed. The cord is partially hidden which acts as the mechanism that allows the lamp to be adjusted.

2012 Year in Review: Highlights

Beyond our event coverage and daily posting, we brought on some new folks, launched new features, and beefed up our social media presence. Here are some of the highlights of the past year: Pinch Food Design’s Taste Column : we were so excited when Pinch said yes to our proposal and can’t wait to see what they cook up (get it!?) in 2013. The Two Percent presents Unframed : David takes us on a monthly art tour to show us the best that NYC’s art galleries have to offer. We made a video for the launch of PATCH NYC at The Shops At Target

A Lamp That Blows Bubbles by Front Design

Presented last week at Design Miami, Front Design’s new Surface Tension Lamp designed for Booo is pretty darn awesome. Essentially it’s a light that constantly blows bubbles. The bubbles catch and reflect the light, just like a regular lightbulb, except each of these is temporary with flecks of color

Hecho en México (Made in Mexico) Exhibition

Last month, five design firms/designers participated on the opening of Design Week México 2012 with an exhibition called Hecho en México (Made in Mexico) , that featured commissioned work for Glocal Design Magazine , an upcoming specialized publication from Mexico City in collaboration with Masisa, leader manufacturer brand of mdf, mdp and particle boards in Latin America. Los Tabos by Christian Vivanco  is a line of stools of varying height created through repetition of a simple form. They seem easy, but designing these required a series of calculations to maintain balance and ergonomics.

Modern Kitchen Accessories by Hlynur Atlason for Umbra

Partnerships happen everyday in the design world and when it’s between a brilliant housewares company and one innovative designer, you have yourself a match made in design heaven. This happens to be the case when the New York-based Icelandic designer Hlynur Atlason recently teamed up with Umbra to create two new kitchen designs – Bento and Tricon . Bento is more than just a cutting board – It’s a cutting board plus measuring cup/storage system. The board acts as a lid to the set of five measuring cups that settle in underneath. Perfect for prepping early and cooking later

LEGO DIY Key Hanger by Felix Grauer

I think my LEGO obsession is well documented by now so I immediately jumped for joy over this key hanger from Felix Grauer . Using some basic LEGO bricks you might have leftover from childhood and some easily obtained split rings, you could make your very own based off of this nifty design. I like how you can separate your keys out if you don’t want to carry them all and then just stack the LEGOs when you want to take more than one with you. Seesaw Bookshelf by BCXSY

Although not a new design, I just discovered it so it’s new to me! Japanese company BCXSY’s Seesaw bookshelf is a pretty neat concept. I bet you could put books you’ve read on one end and ones you’ haven’t read yet on the other. Which side would be heavier for you? BCXSY is the multidisciplinary design studio of designers  Boaz Cohen  and  Sayaka Yamamoto . How would you arrange this shelf?

PANTONE SkinTone Guide

We all know PANTONE as being the #1 authority of all things color in the design industry and now they’ve released a new collection of real skin colors in their new PANTONE SkinTone Guide . The new guide was based off of “more than 1,000 human skin measurements” which lead to the 110 shades in the new library. Each large-sized swatch has perforation to allow for easy visual matching. Each color is assigned a four-digit PANTONE number where the first two reference the “hue or undertone of the skin” and the last two reflect the “tone or lightness and darkness of the skin.” This reminds us of Brazilian artist Angelica Dass’ Humanæ PANTONE/skin-matching project  - check that one out. Our Favorite Concept Designs from Electrolux Design Lab 2012

Remember when we mentioned that we were going to Milan to the final event of the Electrolux Design Lab for 2012? Well, we went and met the top 10 designers in person and listened to them present their designs — they were most impressive! Stay tuned for the winner but in the meantime, here’s a more in-depth look at some of our favorite designs. Industrial design graduate Yunuén Hernández who hails from Mexico designed the Mo’Sphere , a molecular cooking appliance meant to aid the average cook in flavor exploration. After watching videos of famous chefs on TV and seeing their passion for cooking, Hernández discovered that molecular cooking was all about mixing ingredients to make food interesting and healthy. Delving into the world of senses and mixing them up with food flavors, she decided she wanted to enter the competition.
