This summer we will be constructing a 1000 square foot pavilion made of 400 Ikea Ivar chairs arrayed and stacked in a 3-dimensional sine wave surface rising above the ground in Freedom Park, Atlanta Georgia. It’s public art, but also usable in that people can actually sit on it to socialize and spend time in the park sitting in the chairs. The design is very particular to the Ikea Ivar chair because the slightly bent angle of the seatback creates a special texture to the sculpture

Help kickstart the largest IVAR hack

Materials: Malm Bed Base Description: This hack begins with a king-size Malm bed base that we no longer had any use for. Rather than get rid of it I had an idea that the headboard and base were nice-enough looking pieces of wood to be reused and, given that our TV was sitting on a small, worn out stand, I thought I’d have a go at making a TV unit/sideboard/thing.

SaloneSatellite turned 15 this year, and in honor of the late great Steve Jobs, its theme was technology. Salone was the first design event on this scale to dedicate a section to young designers, although in this case, the criteria for “young” is under 35, so they are a little more established than the student designers seen at the likes of Greenhouse at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. I loved Gorgiera Pack by Macarena Pollock. Made of Yupo paper, this fruit packaging turns into a display stand with a simple twist. Equally ingenious is this light from Design Facility , which projects a focused A4 beam, casting into darkness anything that might distract you from the task at hand. Part of the Experience and Product Design Diploma at the Singapore Polytechnic Design School , Design Facility was created as a research facility where students can learn through live design projects.
