I thought it might be fun to follow around a student designer to get a better idea of what it’s like to be a design student these days (or a student in general!). Pratt Institute Industrial Design student Casey Daurio, who graduates in 2013, gladly offered us the opportunity to peek inside his everyday world. Let’s follow him around on the exciting occasion of Pratt Institute’s 125th anniversary celebration: I start my morning by having a cup of tea on my balcony in Willoughby Hall on Pratt’s Brooklyn campus. The view is great and it makes for a good start to the day. Before leaving the residence hall, I grab my essentials and make note of my scheduled daily meetings.

Vancouver-based designer Greg Papove has created a collection of furniture that was inspired by your everyday socks and the stories they have to tell. Socks + Furniture is a coffee table, floor lamp, and sofa that challenge one to take a second look at the mundane and not to overlook the simple things in life. The Five Toes Coffee Table took inspiration from toe socks and supports its tabletop with five legs, one for each of the toes. The socks act as fasteners when assembling and disassembling the table. You can even customize it by using any kind of socks you wish

Ufo is a fun little object from Italian designer and illustrator Luca Cozzi . The multifunctional design not only acts as a bean bag-like place to sit, but it can also be used flat as a comfy place to relax on the floor. It’s made from two triangular pieces of gray felt that zip together to create a three-dimensional form. I love the red that peeks through from the zipper

Young Italian designer Marica Vizzuso has designed B-OK, a space-saving alternative to the usual bookshelf. Vizzuso asks, “Why do you place books in a conventional way when you can have both an amusing and aesthetically interesting alternative?” The shelving system is constructed like a giant tower, yet unfolds into a room divider. Instead of stacking books side-by-side, you pile books on top of one another into a variety of slots. I’m not sure if the books would fall down, but I really like this idea . There’s also something kind of 90s about it – very CD tower-ish that I find a bit nostalgic.

The Traces Tables by Italian designer Uto Balmoral for manufacturer Officinanove are clean in design but with that extra something that makes them unique. The legs are hand-milled steel and are not just for structural purposes, they add an asymmetrical design element to the tabletops. The table legs leave a “trace” of color on the tabletops, giving them their name. Each leg on the square and rectangular tables is 10cm off from the corners, which goes against the norm on most tables.

Industrial designer Robert Bronwasser heads the design studio Smool and he’s created the Casual Chair as part of a line of what he calls “Fashion Furniture.” The comfortable designs are minimal but much like the fashion world, there are unlimited options – like zippers, pockets, leather accessories. The frames are colorful and built much like that of a tent with poles that make it easy to store flat and assemble when necessary. Smool is currently looking for a partner to produce the Casual collection. Dutch designer Robert Bronwasser has created perhaps the most happy watering can I’ve ever seen, or at least the best looking. Designed for the Dutch company Goods , the Spring watering can has two openings – a wide one to fill the can up with water and a narrow spout for watering your plants. Spring purposefully has a skinny neck for you to hold onto while watering. It holds more than two liters and is available in four colors. Happy watering! After spending three winter seasons snowboarding in Chamonix, France, and a year in Hanoi, Vietnam working with students, Swedish designer Jacob Granat started his own company importing and selling furniture, lamps and textiles back in 2006. He quickly realized that selling them wasn’t as much fun as making them himself, so he enrolled in a cabinet-making course, then in university. Now, freshly degreed in furniture design, Granat showed his line ”The Sound of Forest” at the Stockholm Furniture Fair and Superstudio Piu, Milan this year.
