Metro is a seating collection designed by Italian designer Luca Nichetto for Italian company Emmegi . I’m drawn to the two tones of the seat – usually I am not a big fan of two-tone seating but this is appealing. In Italian, a metro is a measuring stick, and the Metro sofa embodies this idea of measurement through the multiple modules – defined by color. Deryn Relph is a British textile designer with a penchant for color and a mean set of upholstery skills – we’ve already featured her work and we were so smitten we wanted to find out how she chooses her vibrant fabrics and makes her psychedelic designs. In keeping with the eco-mantra “reduce, re-use, recycle” Relph re-invents discarded furniture and lampshades, transforming them into contemporary treasures with fibers and yarns sourced predominantly from factory surplus stocks. She shares the steps involved in creating the Renee chair from her Retro Rainbow Rejuvenation collection in this month’s Deconstruction

American designer and Cornell grad Meg O’Halloran presented a new collection of modern seating at the AIA’s Kick Off Party for the Arch and the City Festival recently held at the San Francisco Design Center. The designs of these chairs are the culmination of a year spent working hands-on with vintage furniture projects for En Route Studio . The collection is a nice mix of mid-century modern, Gothic and Art Nouveau merged with the contemporary. Hancrafted in San Francisco and Colorado, the chairs can be made from walnut or hard Eastern maple, and are upholstered with the fabric line Tonus by Maharam Kvadrat

German designer and recent grad Christian Kayser ‘s work focuses on the idea of synergy, using gravity and weight to determine the final shapes. The stool, made of a wooden frame connected by flexible steel batons, changes shape when the user sits on it, creating a symbiotic relationship between the user and the object. Similar to the stool, the weight of this table also puts pressure on its legs, which are help together by a wire.
