Energy-Producing Workspace by Eddi Törnberg
June 23rd, 2012 — Design
The thesis project of Swedish student Eddi Törnberg heads in a direction that should be noted. Unplugged is an office that facilitates producing the energy needed to run all of our office electronics through doing everyday activities. Based on the quote “Human nature is above all things lazy” by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Törnberg’s thesis came from the belief that society as a whole lacks “the will, interest and energy to struggle to achieve a sustainable society.” So instead, Törnberg created a way around it by deriving energy from things we already do and, since we spend so much of our time working, it’s kind of brilliant.

Button Chair by Sanil Choi
July 5th, 2011 — Design
Korean designer Sanil Choi created the Button Chair, inspired by the buttons on our everyday clothing. The back is separate from the seat to make them feel like different elements. Log Chop Bench
May 2nd, 2011 — Design
The Practice of Everyday Design has a new piece — the Log Chop Bench , which represents an exploration in process-based design. They decided to approach the concept of this one-off piece by setting up a series of parameters that would define the final product without them relying on drawings or a concrete final image. Given little instruction and a loose sketch the log was debarked and the seats were axed out by a professional “Lumberjill.” The roughly chopped log seats were then mediated by the fine, hand-sewn upholstery by a motorcycle saddle maker. The project was a fluid evolution from an abstract idea into a physical sculpture that represents a dialogue between the designers and their collaborators. The Log Chop Bench will be auctioned off at the Stellar Living 2011 Contemporary Art & Design Auction for Mercer Union in Toronto, Ontario, on May 12, 2011.
