TechnoCRAFT Exhibition

Industrial designer Yves Béhar is making his curatorial debut in San Francisco this July in a major design exhibition called TechnoCRAFT. Marijn van der Poll’s Do Hit Chair for Droog TechnoCRAFT, which will be on exhibit at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, will chart current movements blurring the traditional boundary between designer and consumer and look at the different ways that consumers are personalizing design in efforts to assert creativity and individuality in an age of mass-production and mass-consumerism.

Polska Folk: Striped Cloth Rug by Joanna Rusin and Agnieszka Czop

Young Polish designers are searching their roots for guidance in their contemporary work. Polska Folk was an exhibition at Tent London last month that showcased some of the floor coverings, furniture, lighting and accessories that evolve out of tradition, such as lively felt rugs from Agnieszka Czop & Joanna Rusin, colourful lampshades from Kafti Design, slick stools from Malafor and jolly graphics from Chrum. Other designers whose work was featured include Agnieszka Lasota, Aze Dsign, Bogdan Kosak, Gogo Design, Platform and WWAA Architects.

Young Creative Poland: Studio Beton & Oskar Zieta

Young Creative Poland is a special exhibition being shown in the Brompton Design District during London Design Week. The showcase is part of Polska!, a yearlong event which aims to promote Polish culture and design internationally. The pieces on display range across a variety of creative fields and focus on the work of young, emerging designers. Highlights of the show include the diverse range of products from the multi-disciplinary studio Beton and the work of Oskar Zieta.

Beton, a design firm run by Marta Rowinska and Lech Rowinski, has several interesting products in the show including Wall 2, a modular system made from cardboard and Fl/2, a piece of laser-cut foam which folds neatly into a tote. The designers also created a range of temporary “chair transformers” called S, which are used in meeting places throughout the exhibition. Oskar Zieta presented his range of Plopp stools along with his FiDU bench. Though the furniture looks like inflatable plastic, the pieces are actually made from thin sheets of metal and formed under high pressure.
