ICFF 2013: Part 3

Rug designer Nani Marquina of  nanimarquina partnered with celebrated graphic designer Milton Glaser for a one-of-a-kind rug. A portrait of Shakespeare is layered with an abstract pattern to form a beautifully textured rug that reveals his face when far away and a pattern when close up. When you think of Waterworks you tend to think of bath fixtures but they’ve designed a series of glass lights as part of their Watt collection for Dering Hall . The ribbed series of lighting, that comes in sconce or pendant form, resembles those glass insulator covers you often still see at antique shops. The Chubby Chairs from Dirk Vander Kooij are just as fascinating to look at as hearing about how they are made

Kartell by Laufen: Bathroom Collection by Ludovica + Roberto Palomba

Italian brand Kartell , well-known for their use of plastic materials, and Laufen , legendary Swiss makers of ceramic bathroom fixtures, joined forces to bring a new type of collection to the bathroom that they call Kartell by Laufen . At the design helm were Ludovica + Roberto Palomba who developed an “interconnected ecosystem where washbasins, sanitaryware, faucets, units, shower bases, bathtubs, lights and accessories coexist with the maximum flexibility, changing their appearance like chameleons to meet the taste requirements of all.” Mixing ceramic items with their rigid lines along with the lightness and transparent qualities of the plastic elements, creates a striking balance of bathroom innovation. Years of research went into the development of the collection, including the introduction of SaphirKeramik, a new, lightweight material that allows for fixtures to be super thin and weighing half that of normal ceramics.

Twisted Lights

twisted-lamps

Designed by Erwin Zwiers, the Twisted Lights are unique, interestingly designed modern light fixtures.

Each light is handmade using bent plywood. The top part is constructed first and then the bent plywood is wrapped around the initial shape.

On Zwier’s website, he describes the process:  “The flexibility of the material invites to make organic forms. The lamp is built from an initial shape, which is the top of the lamp. Against this top bend plywood is wrapped, so that during the construction of the lamp it will grow step by step. During this process the lamps are created. In advance it can not be determined what form eventually will come out.”

Using a similar technique, Erwin Zwiers also makes Twisted Bowls. For more information and to check out more of his work, have a look at his website at http://www.erwinzwiers.nl/.

Calmares I and Calmares II

Round and brilliant like the ball that will drop tomorrow night for New Years Eve, the Calmares I and Calmares II are unique modern light fixtures for your home.

Shown above, the Calmares I is a limited edition fixture of 15 pieces. The Calmares II, shown below, is of a larger limited edition run with 125 pieces. Both are designed by Strala, a design company owned by Tom Strala, an architect “who does not build houses, but tables, chairs and lighting.”

Both the Calmares I and the Calmares II are made from fluorescent tubes that are connected to form a spherical shape. The Calmares I is made of 73 connected tubes, while the Calmares II is made from 13. Each light is energy-efficient, as each consumes only 24 watts of energy.

Would you rather be celebrating New Years around the Calmares lamps than the ball in Times Square? To learn more about Calmares I and Calmares II, take a look at Strala’s website.
