Gravity Candleholder by Jólan van der Wiel

Young, Dutch designer Jólan van der Wiel uses a unique process to make these spikey candle holders that resemble cavern formations. Made exclusively for Paris-based Galerie Gosserez , van der Wiel uses a process similar to that of his Gravity Stools, which we’ve already featured here . He uses a contraption that’s essentially a “magnet machine” that makes these objects through the action of a strong magnetic field with a paste that’s a mixture of resin and iron oxides.

Gravity Stool by Jólan van der Wiel

Gravity Stool by Amsterdam-based designer Jólan van der Wiel is a project that if nothing else, it’s quite magical. Using a combination of gravity and magnetic fields, he’s able to sculpt these organically shaped stools that are unique and one-of-a-kind. So, how does he do it? Well, to begin with he’s concocted a mixture of liquid plastic and iron.

Afraid of Your Own Shadow?

How about the Shadow Chair?

Available through Duffy London, the Shadow Chair is a unique dining chair that appears to be defying gravity by standing on two legs. Take a closer look and you’ll see the shadow of the chair is actually the base of the chair and integrated into the design.

Made of powder-coated mild steel, the Shadow Chair is available in a variety of finishes, including a special edition polished stainless steel version. There is also a Shadow Sofa and a Wolf Within (Shadow Chair) to complete the Shadow Collection.

How many friends and family members do you think you can fool with these illusionary chairs?

Duffy London is a furniture design company started by Chris Duffy in 2002. For more information, visit the Duffy London website at http://www.duffylondon.com.

Drop Bank by Rita Botelho

This Drop bank from Portuguese designer Rita Botelho is made of glazed ceramic and inspired by gravity and the idea that a rain drop falling from the sky is akin to a penny dropping into a bank. © 2010 Design Milk | Posted by Jaime in Home Furnishings | Permalink | No comments | Tweet This | Share on Facebook
