Coalesse brought some California sunshine to rain-soaked Milan as a backdrop to its range of work-life furniture showing at iSalone, which is blurring the boundaries between home and office. I spoke to Toan Nguyen and Scott Wilson about their designs. Toan Nguyen told me about his Lagunitas range and particularly the sofa above: “The brief was for a product that combined lounging and working. I wanted to create something which gave the user a lot of possibilities to work in a new way between the home and the office. People often don’t work at desks anymore – they don’t work in a fixed place, but at the same time they still need to write, to work on a laptop, lean forward sometimes and to lean back sometimes

Swedish designer Markus Johansson has released a slew of new products including the Walking Cabinet . The twisted form of the cabinet, coinciding with the four angled legs, give the appearance that it’s walking, as if it’s on its way somewhere. The body of the frame looks as if you pushed one side in one direction and pulled the other towards you, creating a piece that shows movement. You can even pair more than one together to form an entire system.

I was very lucky while I was at Salone del Mobile to get the chance to interview one of my favorite lighting designers, Michael Anastassiades . First I asked him about the inspiration behind his two new collections for Flos … Then we talked about his approach to design… You talked about the importance of ‘honestly expressed materials’ in your work – could you tell me about how that has informed this range? It’s important, when you’re designing something for a company like Flos. I’ve worked in my own collections in a very experimental way as my personal platform. The creation of my own brand and my own company was very much about achieving the freedom to express what I believed in, in my own way

In the mood for a weekend project? The acrylic bubbles and some gold leaf add a great touch to this simple IKEA lamp shade. I would love a larger version over my kitchen table, but really this lamp would look great anywhere. And to know you did it yourself in a quick and easy project would make it look even better!
For the tutorial on how to make this yourself, check out Pudel-design. Where will you put it??

Combining a mixture of eastern and western, The New Old Light is much like Taiwan, the location of the fixture’s designers, KIMU Design . The simple shape of the traditional paper lantern with the more modern and industrial form of the fixture itself, blend styles and aesthetics to create a fixture that could work with everyone’s decor.

In a courtyard in Brera, there grew a garden of tables… Stone Garden was one of two installations by Nendo Founder and Chief Designer, Oki Sato, for Caesarstone , commissioned to demonstrate the strength and durability of its quartz composite surface materials, more typically used for countertops, flooring and wall cladding. The second installation, The Stone-Edge Table collection, consisted of seven wooden tables, embellished with corner and leg details. Oki Sato said: In designing the Stone-Edge Table collection, I was able to take advantage of the strength of the material. Rather than ostentatiously applying the material to the entire design, we created wooden tables and used Caesarstone to protect the table top corners and feet.

Lately, I can’t get enough of a light pink and gold color combination. I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this above. My light pink obsession is stemming from the color of my bridesmaids’ dresses, and gold I just love. Together, they’re soft and magical. Not exactly modern, but still feminine and often glamourous.
A couple of weeks ago, we talked about painting some walls pale pink. Clearly, I can’t get this pink out of my mind! The only way I could have it in my life is if I were to move into a new home and had a small office area of my own. If that happens, the office would be pale pink with lots of gold and lucite accents – to give this color combo a modern angle. And probably some sort of fur like that nursery above.
What are your thoughts on light pink and gold? Too pale and feminine or just right?
