Product Pick: Wind Up Chair

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could take a seat and be instantly wound up with more energy? If only that’s what this cheeky Wind Up Chair could do!

Although this modern chair can’t wind you up with this energy, it can provide energy for your mobile phone. Designed by PEGA, the wind-up button on the back of the chair has a hidden plug in for your charger. All you have to do is give the winder a few spins and your phone charges as it unwinds.

Wouldn’t the Wind Up Chair be great in cafes for patrons to charge their phones while they work, eat, socialize?

Look for the Helpers

I keep seeing this quote from Mister Rogers. Maybe you saw it during the Sandy Hook tragedy, but I didn’t. It’s gives you a different perspective when watching the horrifying news on TV. And it helps us to not lose faith in humanity, even though we all really want to.

Praying for Boston….

Travel Towers: Leather Suitcase Furniture by Maarten De Ceulaer

The Leather Collection by Maarten De Ceulaer for Nilufar is a collection of artistic, sculptural storage pieces that reflect the designer’s great passion for traveling and exploring the world. Like totems to travel, these towers and piles of suitcases in various leathers were created in collaboration with one of the most renowned leather artisans in Belgium, Ralph Baggaley. Each suitcase looks to be intricately and carefully made, tailored to reflect the luxurious and sophisticated of all nomads. In the flexible Chest of Suitcases , every drawer can be positioned to any direction, so the chest can be placed against a wall or in the middle of a room, so that the drawers can open from all sides. The Pile of Suitcases , which was the first piece in the collection, was thoughtfully assembled to make sure each section housed a particular type of garment.

Muting Everyday Noise: Cloud Boxes

Studio Maarten Kolk & Guus Kusters have created Cloud Boxes, a series of five cloud-inspired storage boxes commissioned by PROOFFlab . Made of semi-transparent latex, the boxes not only dampen sound but visual noise, too. Thinking about acoustics we realized quickly that silence wasn’t our goal in this project. It isn’t that bad to have sound around you when you’re working. It starts to be disturbing when sound becomes noise.

Product Pick: MT Rocker

Even though this week’s product pick is a modern rocker, the style of it is so unique I would display it as a sculpture and never even use it as a rocker! Although it would take any nursery to the level of modern decor superstar…

The MT Rocker is designed by Ron Arad and is a limited edition of 6. It is made of sleek stainless steel.

The chic design makes this a fabulous piece, and is definitely not your typical rocker. What do you think of the MT Rocker?

Faro Mini Fireplace by Rui Pereira & Ryosuke Fukusada

Designers Rui Pereira and Ryosuke Fukusada took a look at how disconnected society has become with technology becoming more and more prevalent and decided to use fire as a means to bring people back together again. Their design,  Faro , is a fireplace that aims to increase socializing by having a place to gather around. The mini fireplace can be used indoors or outdoors with the use of an ethanol burner or regular wood for outside. Exploring materials such as red clay, hammered copper and aluminum, the design evokes a feeling of those traditional wood stoves.

Suburbia Modern Wall Storage

Note Design Studio has cooked up a lot of new products for Milan Design Week, but my favorite has to be this wall storage unit for Seletti . Called  Suburbia , the unit is made of wood with brass detail and features a cork board, built-in mirror, hooks, shelving, and a selection of various sized cubbies to hold anything from pens, to makeup brushes, craft supplies, or even toys. If you look closely, you’ll see that the entire unit resembles an aerial view of a town. Each cubby represents a house or sections of a building. So cute!
