In this edition of The Tools That Make It Happen , I headed up to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for two days of touring the campus, checking out student projects and learning what being an RIT student is all about. Since I’ve never been a design student myself, it was pretty eye-opening! My wonderful host, Josh Owen , who is a designer but also Associate Professor and Chair of the Industrial Design Program at the School of Design, took me around to all the different design departments and he, alongside design professor Alex Lobos, even gave me a tour of the brand new (not yet opened) Golisano Institute for Sustainability (I got to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, and reflective vest!). RIT ceramics studio Instead of focusing on tools and technology this time, I wanted to come at it this time from the angle of the student and teaching culture.

Stal Collectief is a Belgian-based design firm who recently released two new projects that include the Koala 45 hammock and the Zwol pendant lamp. I’m pretty sure I let out a shriek when I saw the massively, oversized hammock that I know I’ll dream about. The group of four’s covet-worthy designs will definitely make you pause and take a second glance and you’ll see why. The Koala 45 might be a bit eccentric but who can’t imagine lounging on one with friends? The wooden canopy structure is held together with 12 bolts and can hold up to eight people when you’re ready to have a relaxing, open-air hangout

Materials: Perfekt Abstrakt High gloss grey panels, wood framing Description: I made this headboard from Ikea’s high gloss kitchen panels. The panels come in 24×80″ so I used 2 horizontally with one above the other so as to not have to cut and re-edgeband them. I ripped four 1″ thick and 30″ long vertical strips from 2×4’s to connect the 2 panels together and spaced them evenly along the back. I then ripped longways two 2×4’s with my table saw blade on a 30 degree angle and trimmed them to 60″ long. I mounted one half of each 2×4 to the wall and the other half on the top and bottom backside of the headboard

Sander van der Haarod of Netherlands-based design firm Spell sent over some of their new projects, of which this Nomad table caught my eye. Because we are still discovering the ways in which we use tablets, we need to re-think how furniture might be better designed to accommodate these new lifestyles. The Nomad table has a special cutout that serves as a stand for your tablet, great for reading, watching movies, or working. Nomad comes in round or square and various colors. Will you be green with envy of those sitting in the awesome Arc Chair? I would!
Inspired by the benches in trams stations in Dublin, Ireland, the Arc Chair is designed by Zbigniew Strzebonski, a freelance designer and furniture maker.
The seat of the Arc Chair is made from MDF and upholstered in bright green felt. The body of the Arc Chair is made out of a 10 mm sheet of acrylic and is formed into its unique folded shape using a thermoforming technology.
For the past three years, Strzebonski has been working for Wedge, a furniture design company in Dublin. His freelance projects can be viewed at his website titled MODESTWORK.
