NYCxDesign 2013: Cartesian Chairs by Alexander Purcell Rodrigues

During NYCxDesign, at WantedDesign we spotted  Alexander Purcell Rodrigues’ Cartesian chairs, a collaboration with California-based innovative aluminum manufacturer Neal Feay . Named after Descartes’ Cartesian coordinate system – the foundation on which CAD software is built – the simple silhouette of Purcell Rodrigues’s chair goes from function to art form. Made of aircraft-grade aluminum with a faded anodized finish, each chair has a mathematically-generated ornamentation on its surface. Using Neal Feay’s cutting edge aluminum fabrication methodologies that uses minimal waste and unique finishing techniques, couples with generative modeling tools and algorithm-based patterns makes this chair a pretty cool and innovative piece of home decor.

Switch Plates Reinvented: Walhub by Upwell

San Francisco-based Upwell , led by designer Justin Porcano , launched its first product that aims to make your life just a little bit easier. The Walhub isn’t your average switch plate though, this one becomes a dedicated site for your essentials – keys, mail, or your umbrella – by having a spot right by your door. You generally turn your lights off when you leave so your eyes automatically go to the light switch anyway, making it the perfect location for your important items. It comes in two versions, the Hang (with two hooks) and the Keeper (with two hooks and a mail holder), and they’re also a variety of options depending on what type of light switches you have

Mategot Coatrack by Mathieu Matégot

I am pretty smitten by the Mategot Coatrack by Mathieu Matégot for Gubi . The design reminds me of the Eames dot pattern or mid-century jacks (jax) designs. The coatrack center is made of brass and the three arms are made of black powder-coated steel

NYCxDesign 2013: WantedDesign Part 1

For the last three years, WantedDesign has been a standout among the design events that take place during NYCxDesign and this year was no exception. With top-notch designers, students, manufacturers, and schools all exhibiting their innovative wares and collaborations, Wanted is definitely a design destination not to be missed. NYCxDesign: INTRO NY

INTRO NY was a side show from the designjunction team featuring a handful of international designs in an all-white space on the edge of Soho. Resident is a NZ-based company specializing in lighting and furniture, but I really fell for the hexagonal pendant and the spinning mobile by Jamie McLellan. Watch it in action here

East, Meet West! Popup and Exhibition at Bobby Berk Home

During New York Design Week , I curated an exhibition and popup shop at Bobby Berk Home full of West Coast designer, makers and artists. Entitled East, Meet West! , the idea behind this exhibition is to introduce more West Coast design not only to New Yorkers, but to the country’s biggest modern design audience in town for NYCxDesign, beyond what they’ll see on the trade show floor. As you walk around the city during Design Week to parties and exhibitions, you often see a lot of the same names, or, at least an overwhelming majority of designers who are based in New York

DIY to Try: Canvas Photos

Do you have a lot if family photos in your home? I don’t, but I’ve been printing a bunch out for a special event and I’m thinking I want to incorporate a style like these canvases above.

All you do is paint the edges of a canvas black – or whatever color you like – and mod podge the photo to the surface. Then if you prefer, you can mod podge over the photo as well. So easy and the effect looks awesome. These would be great for displaying wedding photos, don’t you think?

Charismatic Chandeliers

I must still be in the Gatsby state of mind, because these chandeliers are really calling to me. The style of a crystal can be a bit more on the traditional side, but when placed in a modern setting – forget it, I love it!

These chandeliers you see above are from Endon Lighting. They are reasonably priced, and I can see one in a giant foyer, another in a sleek modern bedroom, a third over a fabulous kitchen table, a fourth in a chic contemporary living room. I would even put one of these babies in the bathroom. Beautiful!

Not sure which one I would choose, but I definitely need at least one of these in my near future. The crystals and the way they reflect the light have a gorgeous effect in any room.

What do you think of these chandeliers? Too much crystal for you or just right?

Tiffany’s for Gatsby

Ok, so last week we talked about The Great Gatsby and how I was dying to see it. Luckily, I was able to catch it this Saturday – in 3D – and I was not disappointed. Has anyone else seen it?

Don’t worry – I’m not going to talk about it and how great I thought it was. What I really want to talk about is the collaboration between Tiffany’s and the movie. Ironically, I had been on the Tiffany & Co. website on Saturday morning because I was looking at a gift idea for someone. On their homepage, there was a link to the video above, which of course side-tracked my gift hunt.

It’s really interesting and quick to watch – it talks about how Tiffany & Co. let the costume designers of The Great Gatsby dive deep into their archive to use pieces for the movie. I was so excited to find this video before I went to the movie, so I was able to find the pieces while watching.

But how about that headpiece that Daisy Buchanan wears? It can be yours for a cool $200,000! Take a look at all of the pieces available for purchase – which would you choose?
