Product Pick: F3

Right now I am insanely jealous of anyone sitting on a beach or even looking at a beach. Even if it’s from their office window. After spending a long weekend in Miami, I’m missing the bright blue water and the warm sand. And this week’s product pick isn’t helping my wanderlust…

The F3 is designed by Fabio Novembre for Vondom. From Contemporist, “F3 is based on mathematical surfaces that flows freely until reach the perfect function of each element. An apparently simple design that requires an accurate study of engineering and high precision, achieving a stackability concept never seen before in rotomolding.”

How badly do you wish you were lounging on one of these chairs right now? Happy Hump Day!!

Milan 2013: An Interview with Michael Anastassiades VIDEO

I was very lucky while I was at Salone del Mobile to get the chance to interview one of my favorite lighting designers, Michael Anastassiades . First I asked him about the inspiration behind his two new collections for Flos … Then we talked about his approach to design… You talked about the importance of ‘honestly expressed materials’ in your work – could you tell me about how that has informed this range? It’s important, when you’re designing something for a company like Flos. I’ve worked in my own collections in a very experimental way as my personal platform. The creation of my own brand and my own company was very much about achieving the freedom to express what I believed in, in my own way

Natural Dye Textiles from Grain

Grain has partnered with Guatemalan natural dye co-ops for a new textiles collection that will launch in New York at ICFF in May 2013. Although they’ve been working in Guatemala now for many years, the Grain duo of Chelsea Green and James Minola decided to rethink all their textile projects solely using unbleached or naturally dyed hand spun Guatemalan cotton. Photo by Charlie Schuck After many experiments and learning, the collection features arious dyeing and weaving techniques, such as ikat and drop loop stitch created in collaboration with local Guatemalan artisans as well as artisans from Antigua. The new items include woven throw pillows, Turkish-style hand and bath towels, and cotton necklaces. The New Old Light by KIMU Design

Combining a mixture of eastern and western, The New Old Light is much like Taiwan, the location of the fixture’s designers, KIMU Design . The simple shape of the traditional paper lantern with the more modern and industrial form of the fixture itself, blend styles and aesthetics to create a fixture that could work with everyone’s decor.

Tetra Light by Brooks Atwood

Inspired by the highly stylized, science fiction film Blade Runner , POD Design’s principal Brooks Atwood (remember the NJIT professor who jumps on a trampoline ? Yeah, him.) designed a futuristic neon desk lamp called Tetra Light . The geometric fixture shines a bright, daylight-inspired glow that’s set with a dimmer to allow you to adjust for any mood. The design, made much the same way as a neon wall light would be, pushes the limits of glass bending by incorporating three bends in the fixture

Milan 2013: Interview with Nendo’s Oki Sato VIDEO

In a courtyard in Brera, there grew a garden of tables… Stone Garden was one of two installations by Nendo Founder and Chief Designer, Oki Sato, for Caesarstone , commissioned to demonstrate the strength and durability of its quartz composite surface materials, more typically used for countertops, flooring and wall cladding. The second installation, The Stone-Edge Table collection, consisted of seven wooden tables, embellished with corner and leg details. Oki Sato said: In designing the Stone-Edge Table collection, I was able to take advantage of the strength of the material. Rather than ostentatiously applying the material to the entire design, we created wooden tables and used Caesarstone to protect the table top corners and feet.
