Another Ceramic Candlestick designed by Marie Dessuant for the British furniture brand Another Country was launched during the London Design Festival . Each candlestick, which is made of a ceramic lid on a turned oak base, sits atop a box that can be used for storage or keeping belongings safe. I love that they resemble pots and pans, but also are reminiscent of old-timey candleholders. Something I can always get down with is a nap, and when something comes out to make my naps better, I’m jumping for joy (actually I’m curling up in the fetal position ready to go to sleep). Furniture company Haworth partnered with designer Marie-Virginie Berbet to create the nap capsule of my dreams called CalmSpace . The module is made for an office where workers can lay down on the upholstered mattress and choose the time they’d like to spend napping – 10 to 20 minutes. To help the napper sleep, the capsule plays preset lights and sounds that make it easy to fall asleep and just as easy to wake up

Sean Yu and Yi-ting Cheng began 22™ in 2005 with a desire to create items in both metal and concrete. Inspired by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the duo set out to rethink ways to use such an industrial material like concrete to make everyday items like clocks and pens. The 4th Dimension Table Clock has a concrete structure where the face spirals around and down like a staircase. The hands create shadows as them move around the tiered down face

I thought it might be fun to follow around a student designer to get a better idea of what it’s like to be a design student these days (or a student in general!). Pratt Institute Industrial Design student Casey Daurio, who graduates in 2013, gladly offered us the opportunity to peek inside his everyday world. Let’s follow him around on the exciting occasion of Pratt Institute’s 125th anniversary celebration: I start my morning by having a cup of tea on my balcony in Willoughby Hall on Pratt’s Brooklyn campus. The view is great and it makes for a good start to the day. Before leaving the residence hall, I grab my essentials and make note of my scheduled daily meetings.

The Barrel Lamp by Nieuwe Heren has a new little brother, the Baby Barrel Lamp, also designed for Dutch design label called New Duivendrecht . The original Barrel Lamp was inspired by the aesthetics of WWI searchlights, and so this is a simpler, scaled-down version of the larger floodlight . Grocery shopping just got a heck of a lot easier with this device called hiku . You scan the barcode of an item you’re running out of or finished OR you speak what item you need right into the hiku and then it magically sends (well, via Wi-Fi) the item name to a list on your phone. No more forgetting food when you’re at the store because you’ll have the list that you’ve been accumulating with you

Valencia-based multidisciplinary design studio Sputnik is run by Majo Fernández, María de la O Reyna, María Salar and Borja Sepulcre, and recently exhibited their latest collection during the Habitat Valencia Fair . Made of lacquered steel and cork, the Sputnik stool and table plays both roles with ease. The stackable K collection of china is made from enameled ceramic and natural wood. The Santorini Lamps are made of glass, natural wood and lacquered wood. The system is formed by a cylindric glass structure and four interchangeable wood pieces that allow the user to direct and control the light to their desire, creating numerous forms and light combinations

Canadian design student Brendan Gallagher might not be finished with his degree yet, but in my mind I think he’s graduated. His Rocker No. 1, which is made of walnut, woven wire mesh and fabric, looks like a classic in the making. For this project Brendan explains that he was tasked with creating a piece of furniture based on the stylistic qualities of a fashion designer. He chose top interpret Canadian company Bustle Clothing into a rocking chair that would appeal to young professionals and fit nicely into a modern home.
