The all-wood Nerd chair , designed by David Geckeler , was the winner of the 2012 Muuto Talent Award, and is thus being produced by Muuto , the Copenhagen-based company known for cool, new Nordic designs. German-born Geckeler, who studied industrial design in Berlin and Copenhagen, focuses on furniture, interior, tableware, and lighting. His cites his driving principles, which are apparent in the Nerd, as “simplicity, detail-orientation, and a pinch of courageous design language.” He treats us to his process in this month’s Deconstruction

French design brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have designed a collection of flatware for Alessi called Ovale that goes along with an earlier set of tableware they created with the same name. Slight curves and a balanced weight were worked out through a lot of trial-and-error prototypes to get to the finished product. Made of 18/10 stainless steel, the cutlery is made with a simple and modern aesthetic, basically a no frills approach to flatware that is the perfect complement to their original Ovale tableware collection . Nendo partnered with Coca-Cola in a new collection of tableware made from recycled bottles. Bottleware makes use of the iconic 1916 “contour bottle”, the ones that are continually collected, rinsed, and reused over and over again. Once these particular bottles couldn’t be used again for their original purpose, Nendo got to work and created this set that was recently exhibited at DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2012 .

Kristine Five Melvær recently exhibited tableware at Food Work , an exhibition initiated by Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll that features 21 designs by eight Norwegian designers, shown during Designtide Tokyo 2012 . These objects are part of her Still Life project, in which she reinterprets traditional still life motives. The first piece, a set of two bowls she calls Soft Bowls, are designed to tell the story of a changing shape.

While at ICFF , I had the pleasure of speaking with Marcel Wanders about his new collection for Alessi , called Dressed. This artistic tableware has Marcel’s signature written all over it — it’s ornate, intricate, and formal. The collection includes silverware, dishware and glassware in stainless steel, porcelain and crystal

Disposable plates are ubiquitous in the contemporary on-the-go style of life. Except that now, people have started thinking a little more about the environmental impact of disposable tableware. We previously posted about VerTerra , so it seems that leaf-based disposable plates are becoming the “it” throwaway dinnerware. Disposable plates by Hampi Products are eco-friendly, biodegradable and they have an attractive design. The production process is completely eco-sustainable, 100% chemical free and the product is compostable.
