The Ribbons of Life Lamp

Melbourne-based Charlwood Design has created The Ribbons of Life — a unique lighting concept inspired by the distinctive and intricate organic structures of nature for The Design Institute of Australia’s Light + Shade exhibition which is part of Victoria’s State of Design Festival . Drawing on a DNA strand as a starting point, Charlwood was interested in exploring the way light interacts with complex shapes. The result is a futuristic, intriguing form that diffuses light into dense, multi-layered shadows. Using their in-house 3D printer for fabrication allowed the creation of new forms previously impossible to manufacture using traditional methods. The final material, a form of ABS plastic gives a soft amber glow to light as it passes through it
